My journey to midwifery began in 2010. In college, I worked with Alabama Birth Coalition and participated in the grassroots efforts that secured person-centered rights for birth givers and legalized (again) the practice of midwifery in the state of Alabama. During that time, I completed doula training and immediately began attending births and teaching childbirth classes—knowing all along that the midwife life was for me. Birthing my first child was a long moment in time so powerful it initiated my relationship with my body and compels my midwife work. Because I believe that making, growing, birthing, and sustaining life is one of the most transformative of human experiences, I chose to ground myself in the spirit of life-bearing and obtained a Master’s in Theology and Conflict Transformation from Boston University. I wrote every paper and eventually an entire thesis on the connections between how we birth and our collective ability to thrive and live peaceably on this earth. My second child was born euphorically at home into my own hands and the hands of an Alabama midwife. With a babe, a spirited young child, and the relentless love of a supportive partner, I chose to complete the Master of Science in Midwifery program at Bastyr University, which included clinical practice with midwives in Washington State and an extensive educational emphasis in botanical medicines for the reproductive years. After all this, plus a pregnancy loss and lots of healing in a span of nine years, the third babe came at home in November 2025 on this side of Midwifery school, this side of working as a Midwife, and it was one of the most humbling experiences of my life—the pregnancy and the birth. It was wild, raw, unhinged, fast, and furious, and my thinking brain was nowhere to be found. In so many ways, this most recent experience was the manifestation of millennia of hopes and prayerful preparation stored at the cellular level, and again, I got to know myself and birth in a whole new radical, metamorphic kind of way.
