Midwifery Care at Home

  • Consultation

Let’s meet! This is a free get-to-know-each-other visit, either virtual or in-person. Bring your questions about midwifery care and this practice, and I’ll have a few as well. Choosing a midwife is an important decision, and I’m here to help you figure out if I’m your person and vice versa.

  • Pregnancy Care

You deserve intimate, thorough prenatal visits. Appointments are usually one-hour and follow the standard of care schedule—once a month until 28 weeks, twice a month until 36 weeks, and once a week until birth—either in my home clinic or in the comfort of your own home as needed.

A typical visit includes: checking in with how you are feeling and how life is evolving for you and your family, informed choice discussions and education, assessment of vital signs, growth of your belly, and fetal heartbeat, birth and afterbirth preferences planning, herbal consultation if desired, and ample space to ask questions. Your support people are always welcome to participate as much as you want during the course of care.

Additionally, most lab work can be collected by the midwife and referrals sent for ultrasounds or physician consultations if wanted or needed.

  • Birth at Home

Your body, your birth, your choices. Birth and body autonomy is most important to this midwife. As long as your pregnancy stays low-risk, healthy, and normal, planned birth at home with a trained midwife is safe. We attend homebirths between 37 and 42 weeks gestation. When labor starts, we stay in close communication, and when active labor manifests, I join you with a couple bags and a box of supplies and provide labor support with all the necessary tools and skills.

As you near birth, a trained birth assistant will join us for an extra set of hands and expertise if needed. Beyond the midwife and birth assistant, your birth team is up to you—partner, siblings, grandparents, doula, family pets, photographer, etc. The birth position, the catching hands, water or land birth—whatever feels right and safe is what we welcome.

It is my midwife’s work to assess for normal during labor and birth while you birth your own way as undisturbed as possible, and when birth at home doesn't go as planned, we offer a supportive transition to hospital-based care as needed or desired. We discuss this possibility during your prenatal care so there are no surprises. Whatever the reason(s) for transfer, you will be accompanied to the hospital and may choose to resume postpartum care at home.

  • After Care

Immediately following birth, the midwife will stay with you for several hours until you and your newborn are stable. We will offer a head-to-toe newborn exam in the first couple hours, review what is normal and not normal for the first days and weeks of your new life together, and help you transition to the fourth trimester. The midwife returns to check in on you—physically, mentally, and emotionally—and baby at 24 hours, 3-5 days, 2 weeks, and 6 weeks after the birth. The midwife also provides initial breast/chestfeeding support and can refer you to local lactation consultants or counselors as needed.
